LLYN-Y-FAN FAWR

Wednesday 15 November 2001

A pleasant day out.

As the weather was so good first thing on Wednesday morning, I decided to spend some time up at Llyn-y-Fan Fawr one of the two lakes in Brecon Beacons (West) area. The other lake - Llyn-y-Fan Fach has yet to be investigated !

Parking at the side of the road between Tafarn-y-Garreg and Trecastle (GR SN 85273 21765) I soon started on my walk to the lake. I followed the river in a westerly direction for quite a way till i arrived at some ruins. Crossing the river to my left I headed roughly south west going uphill constantly. The ground rises relentlessly but the route avoids the boggy bits that abound in this part of the world. Eventually I arrived at the top of the slope to be greeted by a much flatter section but still no lake. Plodding on confidently in the knowledge that soon I would encounter the Lake, I easily covered the last couple of hundred yards when the lake Llyn-y-Fan Fawr came into sight.

The Lake is set in delightful surroundings, and the ambience is one of total peace and silence. Photos were the order of the day, and I took several shots of the lake both in Veliva slide material and digital shots. The weather was so good it was a great pleasure just being there.

A while later a group of children in the 7 year old age group plus two teachers (presumably) arrived and took a break. They were going on to climb to Bwlch y Giedd!  After a while I proceeded along the lake shore to the northern end. There I met up with a party of young soldiers in training. They had a fair old slog ahead of them but a pint or two would be waiting at Tafarn y Garreg upon their arrival.

I whished them all the best then turned heading North East to return to my car. I was heading roughly towards Moel Feity, and was hoping to get some information as to the whereabouts of the boggy regions in this part of the hill.  I managed quite well until I reached Blaen Tawe. I got across a bad boggy bit without too much trouble then it was fairly plain sailing back to the car.

O.K. it was no earth-shattering walk, but I did enjoy the glorious weather,  the peaceful nature of the area, and a few decent photos to boot.

Here are some of my photos taken at the lake.
